A Day in Montpellier

So lately I’ve been noticing that my time here is dwindling and it’s definitely a saddening thought. So today, today as in April 1, I decided to have a relaxing day in Montpellier and see things and do things I had yet to see and do. I’ve been here for two and a half months and I still haven’t seen anything. I’ve realized that when you place yourself somewhere, even in someplace completely new, it’s hard to feel like you’ve seen everything. Montpellier, being a not so small not so big city, I haven’t felt the need to explore every place, because there isn’t that much to see. But then I thought, I’ve been living here, and doing daily things, but I should really go do something different and see the “whole” of Montpellier, rather than where I always go. So today, for the first time, I went to the riviere du lez, which is right in Montpellier, right by a place I’ve been many times. It’s crazy how you can miss things so easily when not looking for it. I grabbed a sandwich and met up with Elyse, Bree, and Megan and sat by the river, sunning, drinking wine, gossiping like old friends, and of course, watched ducks. It was great.

After chasing ducks and laughing a lot, Elyse and I decided to go to the zoo. I had never been and Elyse never made it on her birthday so we said why not. We took the tram to the university, and Elyse explained that the walk wasn’t bad, so walk we did. What she forgot to mention was the huge hill leading up to the zoo that we literally had to bend over to climb. It was hilarious. I found that the zoo in Montpellier is not like a normal zoo. In Montpellier, it’s more of a park with animals. You walk around and then there’s an opening with kangaroos, or an opening with donkeys…it’s pretty funny actually. It’s hard to find the animals, so when you finally find them it’s exciting! We really wanted to see the lions and once we find them we were saddened to realize the “them” was a he, and he was strolling around his little area in a circle. It was so sad. His wife and child were in another cage for some reason…sadly. I really wanted to see the cub. Oh well, maybe next time it’ll come out to play. After a walk around the park with random animals, we got crepes to go, and ate them on our walk to the tram. They were, of course, as always, delicious.

I can’t believe I’m leaving soon. I can’t imagine not seeing the people I see everyday. We’ll be so far apart and who knows when I’ll see them again. I’m just trying to live up every moment I have left, and that’s what I plan to continue to do.
